Speaker:  Merrill Kelem

Merrill Kelem grew up in Philadelphia starting in the Wynnefield/Overbrook Park section, and then in 1962 moved overtop of the family business (Kelem’s Deli & Cafeteria) on South Street. This is where he learned the business, working behind the counter cutting corned beef & pastrami, slicing lox, and every deli delight that soothed the palates of many people. A 1968 graduate of South Philadelphia High School, and also attended Pierce Business College, and later Atlantic Community College. In 1973 Merrill joined the Atlantic City Police Department. He walked a beat and then did 16 years in the Traffic Division as a Crash Investigator and received a certificate from Rutgers as a Police Traffic Engineer. When promoted to Sergeant, he stayed in Traffic. In addition, Merrill had the honor of being one of Frank Sinatra’s trusted security advisors in Atlantic City, and all over the world. He was one of three. He also did the same for Dean Martin, Don Rickles, and many others. He is a member of the Shomrim Society a national organization for Jewish members who are first responders (Police, Fire, EMT). Merrill is now retired and has lived in Ventnor since 1977.
